Background[]
Last Recollection[]
Born to a female Dark Knight and a man presumed to be from the Human Empire, the latter of whom mysteriously vanished when she was a child, Dorothy's mixed parentage led to her to be persecuted by other Dark Territory humans. Due to her mother's close friendship with Vixur, though, the girl was taken as the Dark Knight Commander's protégé, which placed her under his protection. Grateful for his kindness and that of his lieutenant Lipia Zancale in shielding her from the worst of the harassment, she supported his efforts to achieve peace between the Dark Territory and the Human Empire, even after her mother was killed by Integrity Knight Commander Bercouli Synthesis One.
Sometime after the the 5th Month of the 380th year of the Human Empire Calendar (HEC), Dorothy learned Vixur had secretly been corresponding with Bercouli to explore how to prevent war between the realms. These discussions eventually resulted in the Dark Knight Commander planning to sent Lipia as a messenger to the Human Empire so as to open this line of dialogue with the rest of the Integrity Knights. Fearing this mission was too dangerous for the woman, who had just been engaged to Vixur, the girl decided to go in Lipia's stead without informing her. Prior to her departure, Dorothy was visited at her post by Sarai, a young girl she had befriended at an orphanage patronized by Lipia, who wished to bid her farewell. In the middle of these goodbyes, however, they were suddenly attacked by chancellor D.I.L. of the Dark Mages' Guild and several of her followers, who desired Dorothy's extraordinarily large Life for their experiments. The dark mages' ambush forced the Dark Knight to take Sarai with her on her flight to the Eastern Gate, pursued all the while by minions.

Just as Dorothy and Sarai reached the Human Army Garrison at the Great Mound Road, the minions' attacks knocked the two off their dragon, but their fall was broken by a Sacred Art cast by a swordsman named Kirito. After helping the Human Guardian Army eliminate the minions, the scythe wielder allowed herself to be taken into custody so she could granted an audience with Bercouli. There, Dorothy explained she and many others in the Dark Territory, including Vixur, wanted to negotiate peace with the Human Empire. However, the rest of the Ten Lords, the Dark Territory's ruling power structure, would only consider these peace talks if they were held at Obsidia Castle. When several of the Integrity Knights expressed misgivings this was a trap, the girl acknowledged their concerns but asserted they all had to take a chance to avert war between their realms; to her relief, everyone eventually agreed to these terms.
Once preparations for the peace mission were completed a few days later, Dorothy led Kirito and some of his friends into a hidden path through the End Mountains that would let them enter the Dark Territory. Halfway through this secret cliffside road, the group rescued Kainan, an opportunistic but good-natured member of the Commerce Guild sent to escort them the rest of the way into the Dark Territory. Although they were forced to take frequent detours and handle multiple obstacles along the way, everyone safely reached the neutral Trade City with Kainan's guidance, where the Human Empire delegation established a base of operations and the Dark Knight sent a message to Obsidia Castle notifying the progress of her task.
As arrangements for the peace talks were not yet finished at Obsidia Castle, Dorothy and Kainan spent the next several days guiding Kirito's team around the demihumans' domains spread throughout the Dark Territory, hoping familiarizing the ambassadors with the denizens therein would facilitate negotiations between the realms. During this time, the Dark Knight attempted to keep herself distant from the Human Empire representatives, fearing she would have to fight them to the death should the peace talks fail. Despite this, she was fascinated to learn the boy and some of his companions actually came from outside Underworld, a place they referred to as the Real World. At the same time, Dorothy's appreciation for Kirito's kindness grew after he helped recover her mother's necklace when it was stolen by a mountain goblin and even had the damage it had suffered from the theft repaired, along with how he went out of his way to comfort her during one of the girl's bouts of depression over her mother's death.
After everything was ready for the Human Empire emissaries' reception, Dorothy and Kainan escorted them on the long and dangerous trek to Dark Capital Obsidia. Along the way, the scythe wielder bonded with Kirito and his friends over learning a new combat technique that enabled her to work in tandem with others to handle the various magical beasts they encountered. However, her good mood over this was spoiled upon the group's arrival at Obsidia Castle Town, where Lipia criticized the girl for taking her place as messenger without permission. Further compounding her shame, Dorothy's reputation as the Child of Sin was revealed to the Human Empire envoys when one Dark Knight mockingly thanked Dorothy for her actions, claiming she was more expendable than Vixur's lieutenant due to her heritage. Nevertheless, she stoically suppressed her feelings on the matter to focus on the mission.
Once the Human Empire delegation had established another base of operations in Obsidia Castle Town, Dorothy led them to meet Vixur, who also reprimanded her for violating regulations by going in Lipia's stead. Coupled with her embarrassment over Kirito and his companions defending her decision, she quickly left afterward to cry in private, feeling her actions had brought nothing except shame to the Dark Knight Commander. However, the girl was comforted by Kirito, who declared he and the others did not care about her reputation as the so-called Child of Sin and would support her in her troubles as friends. After she had recovered, Dorothy joined everyone in officially commencing the peace talks with the Ten Lords. As the Dark Knight had feared, aside from Rengil Gila Scobo of the Commerce Guild, all the other Dark Territory leaders were still either opposed or ambivalent to Vixur's anti-war stance. The impasse was only resolved when Furgr and Sigurosig, the respective chiefs of the ogres and giants, challenged Bercouli and Kirito to a duel and lost. To the girl's relief, this incident granted the Human Empire representatives the support of the giants and ogres, as well as the opportunity to sway the rest of the Ten Lords to their cause in various ways.
During Kirito's team's efforts to earn approval from Iskahn and Lilpilin, the respective champion of the Pugilists' Guild and chief of the orcs, Dorothy was provoked into attacking other Dark Knights when they disparaged her parents. Having trounced her opponents with Kirito's aid, she confessed to him afterward how she felt conflicted regarding Bercouli's role in her mother's death and her reaction thereof. Comforted by the boy's reassurance she was right in pursuing peace over revenge, the Dark Knight felt confident enough to later accompany him in negotiating with D.I.L., who demanded they bring her the claw of a great magical beast in ogre territory to convince her they were worth listening to.
Upon returning with the magical beast's claw, Dorothy and the others were requested to acquire a mythical fruit in giant territory to further build trust with D.I.L., a task with which Lipia and Vixur decided to personally assist. During the expedition, anxious to prove herself to her superiors, the Dark Knight recited a mantra of victory she had learned from her father. When Kirito expressed interest in the chant, she described how it was meant to mentally prepare the speaker, using words and phrases in Sacred Tongue her father had also taught her in her explanation. To her shock, an equally bewildered Kirito determined from her father's particular usage of Sacred Tongue that the man must have been from the Real World. As she still cherished her father even though her memories of him had mysteriously faded, Dorothy was eager to know more about where the man had come from. However, the girl agreed with Kirito to postpone her inquiry and sharing this revelation with the others for the time being.
Having retrieved the fruit, Dorothy returned with Kirito's band to Obsidia and faced D.I.L. and her followers in a trial by combat for their final test, where the Child of Sin would be given to the dark mages for their experiments if they lost. Refusing to let herself be taken, the Dark Knight aided the swordsman in overpowering the woman, finally winning the dark mage chancellor's respect. Before the Human Empire peace mission could officially secure the support of the Dark Mages' Guild, however, they received an announcement that Dark God Vecta had just descended into Obsidia Castle's sealed throne room, which resulted in D.I.L. instantly turning on Kirito in a bid to gain the emperor's favor. To the girl's surprise immediately following this, the boy and his Real Worlder friends suddenly disappeared amid pillars of light.
Without the presence of the Human Empire peace mission's most influential member, Dorothy was unable to prevent Vecta from inciting the Ten Lords into resuming conflict with the Human Empire. Having been critically injured while covering the Human Empire delegation's escape back to the Great Mound Road, she was forced to spent the next several days recovering and hiding from dark mages under orders to capture her as a sacrifice for a large-scale offensive Sacred Art for the war. Though the Dark Knight was eventually cornered by her pursuers shortly after the collapse of the Eastern Gate, she was rescued at the last moment by Kirito, who announced his arrival with her own chant. Invigorated by the swordsman's miraculous return and affirmation of their comradery, the scythe wielder dispatched the dark mages with his help, whereupon they were joined by Kainan and the boy's Real Worlder companions. Once she learned everyone who had audience with Vecta, including Vixur, had fallen under his control, the girl decided she needed to personally make contact with the Dark Knight Commander to free him from the brainwashing, as well as assist everyone else with stopping the emperor directly. Since Vecta was apparently targeting Alice Synthesis Thirty, the group hoped to locate him by following a massive pillar of light created by the Integrity Knight's Sacred Arts.
As everyone drew closer to the battlefield, however, Kainan was suddenly and fatally struck from behind with a knife, to Dorothy's shock. The dagger was revealed to have been thrown by Vassago, who a terrified Kirito recognized as a dreaded enemy with whom he and Asuna shared a long history. The team then engaged the man, but he proved too powerful for them to subdue; therefore, Dorothy and Kirito reluctantly separated from the others to continue their mission while the rest of the girls remained behind to delay Vassago. Following this, the duo were soon spotted by dark mages, but their would-be attackers were quickly dispatched by Sinon. To their horror, the archer reported that Silica, Lisbeth and Asuna had fallen slaying Vassago while Leafa had succumbed to a dark mage ambush afterward. Before the Dark Knight and the swordsman could properly process the news, they were lured into a trap by maddened merchants and surrounded by ogres, only managing to escape thanks to Sinon sacrificing herself to create an opening. Sensing the bowwoman had also perished by the time they were a safe distance away, Dorothy was overwhelmed with survivor's guilt and grief over the loss of so many who genuinely cared for her. Nonetheless, the girl was spurred by the boy to keep moving forward to at least ensure their friends' deaths were not in vain.
Upon reaching the frontlines, Dorothy and Kirito found Lipia and Vixur respectively locked in mortal combat with Fanatio Synthesis Two and Bercouli. The Dark Knight impassionedly implored her commander to cease hostilities, but he and all the other Dark Territory solders refused to listen due to Vecta's control. Realizing the mental corruption was similar to what her father had once described as a status ailment, she used his teachings to quickly compose a Sacred Art that would remove the brainwashing from everyone. As there was not enough Sacred Power generated from all the deaths on the battlefield to fuel the spell, Dorothy decided to draw the remaining portion from her own Life. Declaring it was the only way she could protect Kirito and everything he cared about, the girl cast the Sacred Art, whereupon she fell into a deep coma from the strain of the spell.
Dorothy was eventually resuscitated by a special medicine concocted by Cardinal with assistance from Alice's younger sister Selka Zuberg. Upon awakening, the girl was relieved to hear her sacrifice had enabled the Dark Territory and the Human Empire to come to a truce. However, in the wake of Vecta's defeat at the hands of Eugeo and Kirito, four mysterious shrines had suddenly appeared in the forbidden areas of the demihumans' domains from which magical beasts endlessly spawned that threatened to overwhelm the entirety of Underworld; empowering each of these shrines at their hearts was a silhouette of the fallen God of Darkness which also resonated with each other to cause natural disasters around the territories. Kirito and his companions attempted to eliminate the apparition at one of these shrines, but it regenerated mere moments after its demise. Following this, Dorothy volunteered for Cardinal's plan to handle the shrines; to that end, the Dark Knight was gifted with the Starlight Banner to maximize her purification abilities.
Over the next few weeks, Dorothy accompanied Kirito's band on a mission to neutralize the threat of the forbidden shrines. Empowered by the Starlight Banner, the Dark Knight would cast a purifying Sacred Art at the entrance of each shrine to dispel the Dark Art sustaining Vecta's Silhouette's regeneration, then follow the swordsman into the heart of the ruins to eradicate the phantom, putting an end to the infinite magical beast proliferation and natural disasters. During these enterprises, she became acquainted with Kirito's Real World allies who had arrived to support the boy, particularly liking YUNA's music. In addition, Dorothy was relieved to find Asuna and the other Real Worlder girls who had died during the war had miraculously returned in the forms and with the powers of Underworld's goddesses. Combined with resolve to never lose anyone close to her again, these developments enabled the girl to accomplish her task with minimal trouble.
With the forbidden shrines cleansed of Vecta's influence, the Dark Territory and the Human Empire were ready to reorganize the armistice into an official peace. Several days into the peace conferences, Dorothy and Kirito joined Alice at Obsidia Castle to check on Sarai and Selka, who both had begun working as Cardinal's assistants. Before they could do so, though, a sudden earthquake prompted them to hurry outside just in time to see the fortress transform into an eldritch structure surrounded by Iron Blood Guard Beasts, legendary monsters summoned and used by Vecta during the war. This was followed by the appearance of PoH and Subtilizer (Gabriel Miller), the respectively revived forms of Vassago and Vecta, who announced they had taken Sarai and Selka hostage and challenged the swordsman and his friends to face them within Obsidia Castle if they wanted to rescue the girls. Outraged by PoH's mocking reveal of how he had forced Sarai to cut out her own eye, the Dark Knight charged at the man in the black poncho but was easily repelled and rendered too incapacitated to pursue the departing invaders.
Once Dorothy had recovered, she and the other Underworld Residents learned from Kirito that there were many unsavory people in the Real World who sought Alice as a unique valuable military asset. PoH and Subtilizer were part of one such group; if they managed to capture the Integrity Knight, they would consider Underworld no longer important and destroy it. Despite being disturbed by these revelations, the Dark Knight insisted on accompanying the boy and his Real World companion in their assault on Obsidia Castle the next day. With support from the Human Empire and Dark Territory armies, the group succeeded in eliminating the Iron Blood Guard Beasts blocking their path and entered the citadel.
In the middle of traversing the monster-filled lower stratum of the altered Obsidia Castle, Dorothy was unexpectedly teleported away from the others into a different area of the palace, where PoH awaited her. To her shock, the man revealed her father was one of Underworld's creators and claimed her mother had been manipulated into begetting her purely as an experiment. In desperate disbelief, the girl protested her father had taught her so much on Sacred Arts so she could survive but was devastated by PoH's counterclaim it was all simply a means to help raise an elite soul like Alice, as well as his insinuation that Kirito had only ever pretended to view her as a friend. Unsure what to believe, the Dark Knight felt she had no choice but to cooperate with the man in the black poncho's ultimatum to kill the boy in exchange for Sarai's and Selka's safe release.
Having confronted Kirito's party in Obsidia Castle's upper stratum, a distraught Dorothy demanded to know if the boy was aware of her father's role in creating Underworld. When he reluctantly admitted as such, the scythe wielder decided that fighting the swordsman was the only way to protect Sarai and Selka. After a fierce battle, she was convinced to stand down by Kirito's sincere declaration he and her father truly cared about her, citing everything the man had taught her to survive and remember him as proof of his love for his daughter. At that moment, they were interrupted by PoH arriving with children kidnapped earlier by him and Subtilizer, including Sarai and Selka. Due to recognizing the cleaver user as superior to her according to the Law of Power, the Seal of the Right Eye prevented Dorothy from disregarding the man's insistence on facing Kirito in single combat. Instead, she focused on tending to a wounded Sarai while Kirito engaged with PoH, even when the cleaver user disarmed the dual-wielding swordsman of his weapons. However, PoH's callous dismissal of everyone who died in Underworld, including Kainan, incensed the girl enough to break her right eye and its seal. Thus freed, the Dark Knight threw the Starlight Banner to distract the man long enough for her to retrieve the Night Sky Sword, whose memory Kirito then used to transmute PoH into a tree.
Once her injuries were healed, Dorothy apologized to Kirito for doubting and turning against him, whereupon she was reassured he did not blame her for it. Encouraged by his affirmation of their friendship, she joined the swordsman, his Real World companions, and the combined Human Empire and Dark Territory forces in Obsidia Castle's throne room for a climatic duel with Subtilizer, who changed himself into a mighty angelic abomination. Although everyone managed to deal significant damage to the monstrosity through a protracted fight, their efforts only resulted in their enemy transforming into an even stronger demonic form. Sensing their allies were nearing their limits, Dorothy formulated a desperate gamble to target the source of the invader's power. Having created an opening for Kirito to attack, the Dark Knight cast a purifying Sacred Art empowered by everyone's prayers for his victory that weakened Subtilizer's invincibility. With Alice and Eugeo shielding them, this allowed the swordsman to launch a decisive assault that vanquished the man for good.
During the celebration of Subtilizer's defeat shortly afterward, Dorothy privately conversed with Kirito, who would soon be returning to the Real World with Alice and his friends. Even though she understood it was ultimately for the good of Underworld, the girl was still saddened at the thought of the boy's impending departure. Nevertheless, they both promised to eventually reunite and create a place where people from their worlds could interact without fear of discrimination. In the meantime, the Dark Knight would support Lipia and Vixur in their efforts to maintain peace between the Dark Territory and the Human Empire.
