«Howling Octave» (ハウリング・オクターブ, Hauringu Okutābu?) is a high-level, 8-hit, One-handed Straight Sword category Sword Skill in Sword Art Online and New ALfheim Online.
Description
«Howling Octave» begins with five high-speed continuous thrusts at the target, followed by a cut downward and then a cut upward, before finally performing a final full force swing from an overhead position. Due to the skill being of very high level, the post-motion delay of the skill is also quite long.
In New ALfheim Online, the skill has a damage property of 40% Physical and 60% Fire.
Usage

- This is the first skill that Kirito uses against the Golden Minotaurus.
Trivia
- Octave is usually used as a term in music meaning the interval between one musical pitch and another with double or half of the former's frequency. However, in this case, "octave" was probably meant to reference "octo", which in Latin means "eight", the amount of hits this skill has.
- The final move of the skill leaves the user rigid in a position that is similar to the initial motion of «Savage Fulcrum» with the other hand, therefore, if the player has two swords and can think about different things with the left and right side of the brain, it is possible to chain in the skill before the delay of «Howling Octave» is over, thus nullifying the post-motion delay.
