The NPC Orchestra (NPC楽団,NPC Gakudan?) in Sword Art Online provides background music to every stage, floor, and event in Aincrad. While it is apparently audible most of the time, the characters rarely seem to take note of it. The music an orchestra plays depends on the time of day. For example, the NPC Orchestra in the Town of Beginnings may switch to playing a slow waltz in the late evening. [1]
On November 6th, 2022, the music performed by an NPC Orchestra--presumably within the Town of Beginnings--was apparently paused during Kayaba Akihiko's announcement that he turned Sword Art Online into a death game. [4] Quickly after the announcement was over, the music "slowly approached from afar." [4]
