In the gameverse canon, the Protagonist is a male with short black hair and blue eyes. He wears a battle jacket with a blue collar and black pants with metal knee pads. The alternative female version of the Protagonist, by default, has long black hair and green eyes. She wears a white battle jacket and red and black skirt. The Protagonist is depicted using a FAMAS G2 model assault rifle as well as a pair of Beretta 93R machine pistols in promotional art and pre-rendered cutscenes. During the Protagonist's battle with Death Gun, they wear a white hood to hide their face.[citation needed]
Personality
The Protagonist is an untalkative person, even having a unique aura of both friendliness and unsociability, according to Kureha.[citation needed] According to Kirito, the Protagonist is similar to Kirito's solo player self in the way he has zero friends.[citation needed]

The Protagonist first logged in to Gun Gale Online when Kureha requested their help with obtaining the treasure of an in-game tournament. Just as they were about to enter the tournament, the two encountered Itsuki, the top player of GGO and the leader of the Alphard squadron, who praised the Protagonist for challenging the tournament despite being a newbie. After the conversation with the top player, the Protagonist and Kureha teleported to the tournament dungeon to begin their combat tutorial.
When the Protagonist was able to master the tutorial, the Protagonist and Kureha encountered Itsuki again, this time along with a player named Taipan. Not wanting to be killed by the top player, the Protagonist and Kureha agreed to Itsuki's request to venture into a dungeon filled with enemy traps in exchange for being allowed to leave unharmed. After fulfilling the request and being spared as promised, the Protagonist and Kureha went their separate ways. Some time later, the Protagonist and Kureha found a device. When Kureha fiddled with it, this unexpectedly activated a warp gate in the room, teleporting the Protagonist to a different part of the dungeon.
Warped to an unfamiliar part of the dungeon, the Protagonist spotted a capsule in the large room they found themselves in. When they touched the capsule due to curiosity, the capsule announced registering them as the master, before opening to reveal a person inside. The next moment, the Protagonist noticed the person starting to fall and immediately attempted to catch them, when he suddenly heard a gunshot in the room. Just then, the Protagonist spotted Kirito charging at them for an attack, and thus decided to shield the mysterious person from the attack.
