Itsuki's in-game model
Itsuki has a red- and narrow-eyed avatar with dark grey hair.[citation needed] His outfit prominently features black and white colours, with red seams overall.[citation needed] The inside of the arms of his long-tailed coat are light blue.[citation needed] He carries gun shells on the side and back of his coat.[citation needed] His canon choice of weaponry is a Dragonfall that resembles a real life Dragunov Sniper Rifle as his primary[citation needed] and a Sirius Optical Sub-Machine Gun as his secondary.[citation needed]
Personality[]
Itsuki was originally a earnest person with a strong desire for friends and companions on which he could depend when he first entered GGO. Over time, however, he began to present himself as a mysterious character unwilling to share anything regarding his real personality. Instead of being an open character, he enjoys providing various bits of information about himself, before promptly following up by claiming that he was joking, thus even his Squadron members do not know much about him.[citation needed] Aside from this, he is a skilled leader and a genius player when it comes to laying decoys and traps in GGO.[citation needed]
Towards the end of Fatal Bullet, Itsuki opened up to the Protagonist for the first time, confessing to the boredom he feels, as well as revealing that the only thing in the world that had sparked his heart was them.[citation needed] In the final chapter of the game, he admitted that he had desperately longed for the Protagonist's utmost friendship, to the extent that he did not care for anything that could pose a threat to that, going as far as creating a devious plan that could kill himself, the Protagonist, Kureha, and Zeliska.[citation needed]
Chronology[]
Fatal Bullet[]
While on his way to enter a tournament implemented as part of a special update to GGO, Itsuki noticed Kureha and the Protagonist also registering for the event. Having heard of Kureha's reputation, the man decided to approach the pair to assess their potential, during which he learned the Protagonist had only begun playing GGO that very day. Impressed with the latter's resolve to participate in the tournament despite their inexperience, Itsuki expressed his wish to face them in the competition, before taking his leave.
Shortly after the start of the tournament later that day, Itsuki unexpectedly encountered Kureha and the Protagonist again while navigating the tournament dungeon with his companion Python. Although tempted to fight the duo, he decided it would be too easy to defeat them for the fight to be worthwhile. Instead, he sent them ahead to handle a difficult enemy deeper within the dungeon, promising to not pursue the two if they could defeat it. After Kureha and the Protagonist managed to vanquish the monster, Itsuki and Python parted ways with them at a fork in the path not far ahead, with the man giving the Protagonist first choice of which route to take.
To Itsuki's disappointment, the route he chose was filled with traps that weakened him and decimated all his other companions, which left the man unprepared when he encountered Kirito the Photon Sword Wielder and his partner Asuna. Only surviving the fight with the pair due to the tournament's duration expiring, he was automatically transported to the SBC Glocken, where he was reunited with them alongside Kureha and the Protagonist. To his shock, Itsuki learned the Protagonist had acquired a rare Type-X ArFA-sys unit (Afasys). Bemoaning his own misfortune, the man nevertheless congratulated the new player on their accomplishment but declined Kirito's invitation to a party to become better acquainted with each other, explaining he needed to meet with his companions from the tournament.
Not long afterwards, Itsuki encountered the Protagonist once more while they were exploring SBC Glocken. Having seen footage of the Protagonist attempting to protect the ArFA-sys unit from Kirito during the tournament, he felt compelled to inquire the new player why they did so. Surprised by the Protagonist's honest answer that they were simply moving on reflex, the man took his leave to ponder on what he had learned.
Sometime later, Itsuki and Python noticed two players harassing another in the streets of SBC Glocken, with Afasys, Kureha and the Protagonist viewing the confrontation nearby. Overhearing Afasys's and the Protagonist's willingness to intervene on the tyrannized player's behalf, the man elected to accommodate their desire by forcing the bullies to retreat, then handed to Python a recording of the incident to be given to the game administrators to discourage further trouble. Afterwards, as he had attempted to converse with the Protagonist earlier but was forced to leave, Itsuki invited the trio to Alphard's headquarters. There, they discussed what motivated each of them and other people to start playing GGO. Upon learning the Protagonist had no special reason to continue playing the game, the man suggested that the new player join Alphard, sensing their potential and hoping to discover more about them, though he settled for adding each other to their friend list when the Protagonist declined the offer. Thereafter, he was able to join them on their adventures.
Following a brief unexpected visit from Zeliska and her ArFA-Sys unit Daisy immediately prior to the release of the SBC Flügel, Itsuki gathered in Kirito's residence along with the boy's friends to discuss their next course of action. Having opted to first send a scouting party to ascertain the difficulty of entering the ship, the man drew lots with the others to determine who would accompany Afasys and the Protagonist on the mission, only to lose the position to Kirito and Kureha. Once Afasys and the Protagonist succeeded in gaining entry to the new area despite some initial severe difficulty with handling the Gatekeeper boss guarding the SBC Flügel, Itsuki elected to resign leadership of Alphard to Python so he could form a new squadron with the Protagonist for convenience of access to the ship. Despite being criticized by the other Alphard members for not consulting them on the matter beforehand, the man abided by his choice but assured them he would eventually return.
Shortly afterwards, Itsuki joined the other members of the Protagonist's squadron as they began their expedition into the SBC Flügel, during which the group temporarily split into smaller teams for quicker exploration. While traversing the ship's bow alongside the Protagonist, the man noticed what seemed to be a teleporter trap. Out of an impulse to test his companion's trusting nature, he tricked the Protagonist into activating the trap while he remained out of range, sending his partner to a different area of the dungeon; once the Protagonist managed to return, Itsuki claimed he was unable to follow after them due to being occupied with another trap he accidentally triggered. To his surprise, the other player easily accepted his explanation, causing the man to momentarily wonder how far he could push their limits.
Having rejoined the rest of the Protagonist's squadron, Itsuki eventually encountered a sealed door that blocked access to the deeper levels of the SBC Flügel. In the process of searching for keycards to unlock the door, Itsuki and the others elected to briefly return to SBC Glocken for a break. As they entered a bar for refreshments, they noticed one of the bar's monitors streaming an MMO Stream broadcast featuring XeXeeD. While watching the program, the group witnessed a cloaked player approach the holo-panel and accost XeXeeD for his haughty attitude, before shooting at the screen with a pistol. To everyone's surprise, XeXeeD abruptly disconnected with a pained expression almost immediately afterwards, as if he had been killed by the mysterious player's bullet. Sensing the entire affair was more than just a stunt, Itsuki attempted to follow the cloaked player while everyone else was distracted by what happened to XeXeeD but lost him outside the bar.
Sometime later, Itsuki was contacted by Kirito to visit him in his quarters, where the boy requested him and the rest of the squadron to discontinue playing Gun Gale Online for a time. When everyone pressed him for an explanation, they learned that XeXeeD and another famous player named Usujio Tarako had died in real life while apparently in FullDive, supposedly as a result of being shot by the same cloaked player, who called himself Death Gun. Recalling what he had seen with XeXeeD earlier, Itsuki relayed everything he knew about the event to Kirito. Although all the man could identify from Death Gun's avatar was his height and body type, as well as the handgun he had used, he deduced from the mysterious player's speech that Death Gun was likely targeting famous players, including himself. Intrigued by Death Gun's apparent power to kill people from within the game and willingness to use it, Itsuki stepped outside for a moment to collect his thoughts. After a conversation with the Protagonist regarding what they had heard, he decided to not stop playing GGO temporarily, as he was interested in how relatively calm Kirito and his friends were about the situation and wanted to see how they intended to handle it.
Having located all the keycards, Itsuki and the others returned to the SBC Flügel to unlock the door, through which they proceeded to the dungeon's depths, frequently returning to SBC Glocken for resupplying. During these breaks, the man found himself growing closer to the Protagonist, wanting to know more about them and subtly confiding in them that his real life was not as pleasant or peaceful as he imagined everyone else's to be. This culminated in him gifting the Protagonist with the first gun he had ever purchased in GGO, as a symbol of his appreciation for their acceptance of his eccentricities.
At the same time, Itsuki became nonplussed over his growing fondness for the Protagonist and their ability to seemingly accomplish anything, as well as how being around them reminded him of how he felt when he first turned to virtual reality (VR) games, a sensation that alleviated his boredom. Wondering if Kayaba Akihiko had transformed Sword Art Online into a death game to recapture that same feeling, he decided to attempt replicating a death game of his own as a final test of the Protagonist's character. To that end, he enjoined Python to begin programming a VR space on GGO's server separate from the game itself to serve as the setting for his scheme. In addition, he arranged for two NerveGears to be stolen from a research facility for use in his plan.
Ambush of the Imposters[]
Sometime during one of their breaks from exploring the SBC Flügel, Itsuki was visited at Alphard's headquarters by Afasys, Kureha and the Protagonist, who requested his help in investigating rumors that ArFA-Sys units had recently been appearing as enemy NPCs, as well as how another ArFA-Sys unit had been impersonating Afasys and interacting with several players in SBC Glocken. Interested by the trio's suggestion these two phenomena were linked and leading up to some sort of event concerning the SBC Flügel, he contacted one of his subordinates for any information on the matter. Once the man received a message from the Alphard member that enemy ArFA-Sys units had potentially been spotted at the Forgotten Temple in the Forgotten Woods, he opted to join the three in pursuing this lead.
Having entered the Forgotten Temple, Itsuki and the others eventually encountered to his shock enemy ArFA-Sys units resembling him and Kureha, whose equipment and personalities were apparently based on the players' early days in GGO. Disgusted over being reminded of how he used to act, the man asserted they had to pursue and eliminate his doppelganger after it fled deeper into the dungeon following the quartet's defeat of Kureha's double. Midway through their hunt, they found Zeliska also exploring the area alongside Dyne, Musketeer X, and Yamikaze. To Itsuki's irritation, the group was forced to pause to explain to the newcomers what they had discovered, after which they were accosted by an ArFA-Sys copy of Zeliska's old self. Once the clone was dispatched, the squad continued their chase while the woman and her associates departed to handle other matters.
As the team cornered Itsuki's lookalike at the end of the Forgotten Temple, the man was prompted at the Protagonist's prodding to retract his repeated prior denials that the enemy ArFA-Sys unit was a perfect imitation of his past behavior. This reluctant admission empowered the gunman to finally terminate his clone with assistance from his companions. When Afasys and Kureha attempted to comfort him afterward over being reminded of what he perceived to be a shameful period from his past, Itsuki dismissed their protests that his longing for friendship back then had been fulfilled through his relationship with them and so many others. To his surprise, the Protagonist declared they also considered him a close friend, a statement he deemed as more genuine than from others due to their nature. Touched, the man returned to SBC Glocken ahead of the others, announcing he needed some time alone.
Collapse of Balance[]
Shortly afterward, Itsuki received word that high-level enemy ArFA-Sys copies of player were attacking SBC Glocken in massive numbers, making it difficult for anyone to leave the city. As he had heard Afasys, Kureha, and the Protagonist were out in the field investigating earlier enemy ArFA-Sys unit sightings, the man accompanied Daisy and Zeliska in fighting their way through the horde to them. With some effort, they managed to reach the trio's location in the Solitary Sands, who had been joined by Asuna and Kirito, as well as friends of the Photon Sword Wielder from another game, Alice Synthesis Thirty and Eugeo. Having returned to the Protagonist's room, the group learned the enemy ArFA-Sys units had been created by Lievre, the Type-Z ArFA-Sys Unit that had been impersonating Afasys, as part of a plan to destroy SBC Glocken's non-combat zone generation devices and have its inhabitants set themselves against each other in the aftermath.
While everyone began working on either protecting the non-combat zone generators or stopping Lievre directly, Itsuki found it hard to care about the situation as much as they did, claiming the developers could simply perform a rollback if the devices were destroyed. However, he conceded Zeliska's rebuttal that the ensuing chaos should the Type-Z ArFA-Sys Unit's plot succeed could prompt many players to permanently quit GGO before the rollback could be completed, to the point that the game's playerbase could potentially be altered for the worse. Despite that and the Protagonist's earnest plea, the man still was not fully convinced and took his leave.
Later, as the enemy ArFA-Sys units reorganized their numbers for a frontal assault on SBC Glocken, Itsuki changed his mind and ordered every member of Alphard to reinforce the players resisting the horde at defensive points around the city. Then he joined the Protagonist's team at one of these positions, where he found them being assailed by the Behemoth, a boss-level enemy tank Lievre had reprogrammed for her scheme. Apologizing for his absence, the man joined the others in a renewed counterattack against the Behemoth even as the Type-Z android disabled all her safety limiters and personally entered the fight.
After a grueling battle, the band succeeded in destroying the enemy tank before it could reach the non-combat zone device they were protecting; at the same time, all the other defenders dispatched the rest of the invaders, much to Lievre's disbelief. Once the android was forced into a comatose self-repair mode to heal the damage incurred from extensively overclocking her system, Itsuki briefly pondered on the capabilities and motives of the Type-Z ArFA-Sys Unit's unknown master, who everyone had determined earlier must have been the one behind Lievre's actions. However, the man dismissed the matter and joined the others in celebrating their victory, after which they eventually resumed their exploration of the SBC Flügel.
The Clincher[]
Soon, Itsuki and the rest of the Protagonist's squadron reached the lowest part of the SBC Flügel's depths. There, they eventually found the mainframe of Mother Claudia, the corrupted Artificial Intelligence (AI) governing the ship's core system, being guarded by the final boss of the SBC Flügel questline. Though the man advocated following the intended strategy of clearing the quest via reinstalling the system, which would delete Mother Claudia, he acquiesced to the Protagonist's decision to instead fight the Wary Hierophant boss so Afasys could physically connect to the mainframe. Once they had vanquished the boss and repaired Mother Claudia, the group returned to SBC Glocken to celebrate being the first ones to complete the quest series.
Somewhat astonished by the improbable success of the Protagonist's choice and how it apparently was a better outcome than what he had suggested, Itsuki quietly snuck away from the festivities while everyone else was occupied, rebuffing Bazalt Joe's and Zeliska's attempts to persuade him to return. Having been approached by the Protagonist outside SBC Glocken's observatory after the party, the man admitted to the other player how their presence had reignited his interest in virtual reality. Although he initially attempted to downplay his confession by claiming he was only joking, Itsuki found himself crying to his surprise, realizing the emotions he was feeling were genuine and could not be denied. Thus, he dropped any pretense of insouciance and earnestly inquired the Protagonist what he was to them, hoping they could be the one sincere, unfailing loyal friend he had been searching for. Dissatisfied to learn the other player did not value him over the rest of the squadron, the man contacted Python to order him to place the final touches on the death game area. As all other players were disconnected from GGO's server as part of the death game area's creation, he declared he would do whatever it took to make the Protagonist his and his alone.
Having rejoined the Protagonist and their friends once they managed to log back in the next day, Itsuki feigned ignorance on the cause behind the mass disconnections, before assembling with the rest of the squadron in the Protagonist's residence to organize a hunting expedition. Still intent on becoming the squadron leader's sole source of comfort, the man made several insinuations to Kureha that she was weaker than the Protagonist and no longer needed. This incited the girl into challenging the Protagonist to a duel, which resulted in her leaving the squadron and removing everyone from her friend list. Almost immediately afterward, Itsuki learned Zeliska was also temporarily leaving the squadron to focus on matters in both virtual reality and real life and would be unreachable until then. Though mildly surprised at the new development, he saw it as another opportunity to further his goal by claiming he needed to leave the squadron as well to return to Alphard. However, the man promised the Protagonist he would remain in contact and not abandon them unlike Kureha or Zeliska, hoping the successive departures would manipulate the other player into growing more reliant on him.
A short while later, Itsuki was visited at Alphard's headquarters by Afasys and the Protagonist, who informed him of Kirito's plan to enter the Bullet of Bullets in an effort to apprehend Death Gun. Seeing this as the perfect opportunity for his scheme, the man claimed he was too busy with his squadron's schedule to participate in the tournament or anything else, then planted a seed of unease in the other player's mind by lightheartedly warning Death Gun might be targeting them. After the duo had taken their leave, he sent one NerveGear and two disguised AmuSpheres to Python, with the instruction to program the devices to automatically log their users into the death game area. Then Python was to randomly send them to Kureha's, the Protagonist's, and Zeliska's real-world addresses, along with in-game messages from a false Death Gun account to persuade the trio into equipping the FullDive units.
Once all preparations were complete, Yukitsugu equipped his NerveGear and logged in at the designated date and time, fully willing to risk his life in his plan to manipulate the Protagonist into relying solely on him. To his surprise, he found Kureha and Zeliska had accepted the so-called challenge from Death Gun and had also logged into the death game area right after the Protagonist, who somehow was accompanied by Afasys. However, Itsuki concealed his reaction and pretended he had received a threatening message from the mysterious gunman like they did. Admiring the girls' resolve to capture Death Gun despite the risk to their lives, as well as the Protagonist's assertion they would all survive the death game, he followed them deeper into the area, where they were teleported into an arena with a powerful boss monster, The GM.
After the group managed to beat The GM without serious injury, Itsuki's mild astonishment over their surprising victory was quickly replaced with dismay when Afasys was suddenly contacted by Yui, who had noticed the android's conspicuous absence from GGO. Then Kirito was transported to their location, who explained that the real Death Gun and his accomplice, whose actual names were Shinkawa Shouichi (Sterben) and Kyouji (Spiegel), had already been arrested. Determining his exposure was likely inevitable, Itsuki revealed himself as the mastermind behind the creation of the death game area and how Python had assisted him, as well as his scheme's intent to make himself the only person on which the Protagonist would depend. Admitting he had not expected Kureha or Zeliska to answer his summons in defense of their friends or for Kirito's company to support the Protagonist in their time of need, the gunman nonetheless opted to follow through on his plan. Announcing the death game would only end once he had been vanquished, he summoned Last Judgment, an even stronger variant of The GM, before withdrawing to an elevated, safer position.
Impressed when the Protagonist succeeded in defeating Last Judgment with reinforcement from the rest of the squadron, Itsuki applauded their victory over everything he had put them through. Refusing everyone's requests for his surrender, the gunman pointed his weapon at Kureha and Zeliska but was forced to engage in a standoff with the Protagonist when the other player used the Ultimate Fiber Gun (UFG) to reach his position. Shocked to see they were using the same gun he had gifted them, meaning they still cared about him even after all he had done, he bemoaned the utter failure of his plan. Nevertheless, Itsuki challenged the Protagonist to shoot him, which would result in the NerveGear killing him, idly threatening to kill himself if they refused. Before either player could react, though, the system began an emergency shutdown of the death game area. As everyone was being logged out, Itsuki promised the Protagonist that they would eventually meet again, as he still wanted to know the reason why the other player originally turned to VR.
Dissonance of the Nexus[]
Sometime after, Yukitsugu was recruited into Rath by Kikuoka Seijirou, who tasked him with investigating the Seed Nexus's enigmatic interference in GGO. Since an AI copy of YUNA had been created and needed a place where she could retain her sense of identity, the man recommended they upload her to GGO, where they could hopefully use the AI idol as an observation point on the Seed Nexus's machinations.
Following the successful stabilization of YUNA's data, Itsuki was stealthily checking on the girl's progress when he was forced out of hiding by Eiji. The man obliquely explained his purpose in trailing YUNA, as well as his relationship with the Protagonist, before taking his leave, announcing he would see the other man again when the latter returned to his work. Then Itsuki sent an anonymous message to the Protagonist, wherein he admitted he missed them and was looking forward to their eventual reunion.
