Sword Art Online: Integral Factor (ソードアート・オンライン インテグラル・ファクター?) is a freemium online RPG, announced during Tokyo Game Show 2017 on September 23, 2017. It was released for iOS and Android in Japan on November 30, 2017[1], globally on March 27, 2018[2] and for PC on Steam on August 22, 2023.[3] The game takes place in Sword Art Online, where players can use their own avatar to clear the game, alongside a partner named Koharu (コハル?).[4] The game allows players to create their own story of clearing Aincrad from the start of the SAO Incident in 2022.[5]

Game Structure[]

Integral Factor features a standalone and original timeline for the Sword Art Online series, set in Aincrad, the world's first FullDive VRMMORPG. The story takes inspiration from the Progressive series, as well as the rest of the Aincrad Arc and its events primarily focus on the game's protagonist and their adventure throughout the floors of Aincrad.

The game features three separate narrative aspects;

  • Main Story: This is a single, chronologically told storyline, canon to the events of SAO:IF.
  • Character Quests: These stories take place after a given floor clear, but otherwise without a clear chronological placement. They act as side stories, sometimes tying into the Main Story and act as canon extensions of SAO:IF.
  • Event Stories: These stories are non-canon narratives tied to limited time events, either commemorating real world holidays, other Sword Art Online multimedia projects or crossovers with other series. These events are never referenced by the canon stories of the game and exist as standalone or overarching narratives.

Sword Art Online Beta and Early Floor 1

On the final day of the Sword Art Online Beta Test, the Protagonist was progressing through a Labyrinth Tower, when he stumbled upon a female player named Koharu. Finding the Labyrinth area too difficult to handle, the girl was delighted to encounter another player in the dungeon. Persuading the boy to teach her the basics of the game, Koharu spent some time grinding alongside the Protagonist, until an unexpectedly powerful monster abruptly spawned in their area. As the duo were being outmatched by the monster, another player rescued them with a swift attack and advised them to relocate to an easier place, letting them know that much tougher enemies periodically spawned in the Labyrinth. Koharu and the Protagonist thanked him for his help and introduced themselves, and asked for his. The strong player introduced himself as Kirito. After sharing his name, Kirito promptly continued to explore deeper in the dungeon. Koharu had a chat with the Protagonist, talking about how she wanted to get much stronger when the game fully released, after being impressed by Kirito's power. Agreeing to see each other in the full-release version of the game, the two of them shared their farewells as the announcement for the ending of the beta period rung in their ears.

Floor 1[]

On November 6th, the Protagonist dived into the full release of Sword Art Online and spawned in the Teleport Gate Plaza, wondering if Koharu has already logged in. They stumbled upon another player while lost in thought about Koharu's whereabouts, promptly apologizing from him. The red haired player, who introduced himself as Klein, suggested they should look around the plaza as it was the designated meeting spot for a lot of groups. Complaining about how he was the only one online so early from his group, Klein sent the Protagonist off on their search wish good luck wishes.

As Koharu had decided to use the same avatar to be recognizable for the Protagonist, who had the same mindset as well, the search did not take long. After a quick catch up, Koharu requested a refresher on how to battle in SAO due to feeling rusty since the beta test was a long time ago. The duo headed out to the nearby plains to train. Klein, who was nearby training with Kirito, saw Koharu was struggling and invited them to "Kirito's battle lesson", much to Kirito's inconvenience.

After a training session together, Klein decided to log-off for the day, citing the pizza he had ordered beforehand. But a quick glance from Klein at his menu showed that the log-out button was nowhere to be found, nor was it visible for Koharu or the Protagonist. As Kirito found the circumstances of an "unexitable game" to be suspicious without any emergency announcement, the quartet heard the bells of the Town of Beginnings and were forcefully teleported into the Teleport Gate Plaza, where Kayaba Akihiko greeted them, as well as every other player present in the game who also got forcefully teleported into the plaza, in a huge, red robed Game Master avatar.

Welcoming all the players to his world, Kayaba revealed that the lack of a logout button was no error and that the players were now stuck in the world of Sword Art Online. He informed them that there would not be any rescue coming from the outside, as he had taken measures for the NerveGear devices to fry the players' brain, if there was any attempt to remove the helmet, follow by the notice of 213 deaths from the real world, caused by parents and friends who did not heed the warnings. The only positive notion that Kayaba uttered was that the players' real bodies would be allowed transport to hospitals during this time.

The plaza roared in protest, but Kayaba continued his speech, that Sword Art Online was no longer a game, but a reality the players would be living in until they cleared all 100 floors. Should their HP drop to zero, their avatars would be burst into polygons and simultaneously, the NerveGear would fry their brains. Following his shocking announcement, Kayaba provided a gift to all players to remind them that SAO was now their reality, a hand mirror appearing in everyone's grasp.

Engulfed in white light, players slowly realize that their avatars now feature their real looks, rather than the avatars they created in SAO. The protagonist mentioned that Koharu did not change at all, prompting a response that she had simply used her avatar from a VR clothes shopping app for the beta. She also added that while she felt embarrassed, she decided to use the avatar in the full release too, so that the Protagonist could recognize her easily. But the chatter ended promptly, when Kirito realized that Kayaba's plan was very thorough to make people feel like this was their reality now. At that moment, Kayaba wished luck to all the players, and disappeared, as the plaza got overwhelmed by screams, crying and sheer panic.

As Koharu lost her composure after Kayaba's announcement, Klein and the Protagonist carried her away from the crowded plaza. When she came to herself later, she found out that Kirito was no longer with them as he went off to do his own thing, per Klein's explanation. As the duo made sure Koharu was feeling okay, they were suddenly approached by a hooded figure. The girl with a clean face, brown eyes, and curly golden-brown hair introduced herself with a nasal voice as Argo.

After Argo commended Klein for taking care of a newbie like Koharu, he took his leave to look out for his friends who were still presumably in the Teleport Gate Plaza, stating that he was only a message away if they needed anything. Being impressed by the Protagonist's commitment to helping clear the game, she sent them to hunt for materials to earn Cor. Koharu, sharing the Protagonist's sentiment, decided to help them in Origin Plains.

The duo returned to Argo following their hunt for Frenzy Boars with the drops. While the Protagonist was confident in his hunting capabilities, Koharu was unsure of hers, but refused to sit idly by. Reassuring her that her feelings were nothing out of ordinary, Argo guided the pair to obtain some new gear via item forging. When Koharu suddenly asked the girl why she was helping them, Argo explained that as an information broker, early bolting players like the Protagonist and Koharu were a rare commodity and were useful contacts to have in her business. She kindly reminded them that they now owed her a favor, eager to see how her investments into the pair would pay off in the future.

As the Protagonist forged a Small Buckler per Argo's recommendation to ensure their safety and upgraded their equipment at the nearby Blacksmith NPC, she explained the basics of the game, ranging from weaponry, damage types, armor, as well as Sword Skills and Records. As the Protagonist and Koharu purchased new armor from the nearby merchant, two new players approached the duo. The boys in pink and yellow introduced themselves as Ulrik and Miyurin respectively, and asked for help from the pair on a quest they were tackling.

The Protagonist and Koharu agreed to help the duo and returned to them shortly after collecting the 5 Wolf Claws required for the quest. Ulrik shared his offer to join up with them, however a spiky haired player immediately vetoed on behalf of the Protagonist and Koharu, promptly scaring Ulrik and Miyurin away. Bluntly stating that the newbies would hold promising players back in progression, the passionate player introduced himself as Kibaou. He confidently stated that him and his group would clear the floor and that he was recruiting players who could handle the best quests in order to power level. While Koharu showed hesitation due to Kibaou's rude attitude, the duo still accepted to collect materials to assist the group in floor clearing preparations. However, after completing Kibaou's task, the Protagonist and Koharu refused to join Kibaou's group, stating that they cannot abandon lower level players in need of assistance. The spiky haired man reiterated that his offer would remain open, should the duo change their mind, and that he hoped they would join before the eventual battle against the Floor Boss before leaving them to ponder in the Town of Beginnings.

Helping players and the creation of the Clearers on Floor 1

Koharu decided they would be better off having something to eat with the Protagonist to clear their minds. However, her loud and frustrated reaction about the realism of SAO when she realized her bread had gone stale over time, invited the attention of a nearby female player donned in light blue armor. Having heard of the endeavors of the duo helping the frontliners despite being of similar age, the girl shared her admiration and introduced herself as Sachi. As they shared a meal together thanks to Sachi offering her fresh sandwiches, the girl in blue candidly expressed her fears regarding the weapon combat in SAO and how her friends from real life were questing out of town at that very moment without her. Sensing Sachi's worries about the safety of her friends, Koharu offered to gather info about the monsters, so that she could at least relay it to them to be helpful for the group.

After defeating some Frenzy Boars, Kobold Henchmen and Little Nepenthes in nearby areas, the duo reported back to Sachi with all they learned fighting the monsters. As they did, a blue haired male player in medium armor approached them, impressed by the generous act of the duo. Sharing his compliments for sharing knowledge with other players for free, the man formally introduced himself as Diavel, and invited them to the town of Tolbana where he would be holding a meeting with the players keen on defeating the first floor boss. While hesitant about their own power, the Protagonist and Koharu bid farewell to Sachi and decided to head for Tolbana to hear Diavel out.

Upon their arrival at Tolbana, the Protagonist and Koharu were directed to the Tolbana Amphitheater where a boss meeting would be held. While Koharu was still uncertain about joining the clearing efforts, Diavel whom they met before the meeting, gave an encouraging speech to them to earn their commitment. As the meeting preparations were still ongoing, Diavel requested the duo to activate the Teleport Monument in Tolbana to allow safe travel for other players into town, as well as the monument in Quest Plains for safe travel to the entrance of the floor labyrinth.

After activating the Tolbana Teleport Monument, the duo headed to the Quest Plains. As they were talking in front of the Teleport Monument before activating it, they were approached by another player in a rugged hood, impatiently asking them to make way so that she could activate the Monument. Seeing that their motives were aligned, Koharu offered to work together with the hooded player but was promptly refused. They also turned down Koharu's offer to return to Tolbana together, stating that she did not want to waste any time and would be hunting monsters until raid groups were formed up. Before Koharu could respond, the hooded player left into the labyrinth. Worried about the fencer's sad face she caught a glimpse of, Koharu suggested they return to Diavel to report back the activation of the Teleport Monuments. Following their assignment, the Protagonist and Koharu were given an additional task to collect some materials in Horunka Woods as part of the meeting preparations, which they quickly fulfilled.

Koharu and the Protagonist met in Tolbana plaza the next day and headed to the amphitheater for the strategy meeting. Koharu was glad to see the hooded player safe and sound at the meeting, and was relieved to see Kirito next to her too as a familiar face participating. However, after Diavel's rousing opening speech, the spiky haired player, Kibaou, cut him off in an attempt to confront the Beta Testers for monopolizing the hunting grounds to get a head start and leaving other players behind. After everything they had done for players in need, Koharu felt the urge to respond to the accusations, but was stopped by Argo, who saw the girl was too stressed to take Kibaou on. Fortunately for her, a tall and bulky player stood up from his seat and introduced himself as Agil. He drew the attention of everyone to the guide book freely available in town that was prepared by Beta Testers, overflowing with valuable information to survive and hunt, yet careless people had died not deciding to learn from prior information. Agil promptly added that the point of the meeting was to not repeat those mistakes, but rather get informed about their upcoming hurdles by utilizing the knowledge Beta Testers had collected for them. This led to Kibaou sourly taking his place in the stands and allowed Diavel to continue the meeting.

After informing the attendees about the Floor 1 Boss, Illfang the Kobold Lord, Diavel dismissed the players and announced they would be meeting the next day in Central Tolbana. After the turn of events, Koharu wanted to inform Diavel that they were Beta Testers too, but was instead cut off by him with a task to collect materials to reinforce the weapons of the participating players. After collecting the materials from Slate Boars in Horunka Woods, the duo returned to Diavel. Upon their return, Diavel sent Koharu on another task while requesting the Protagonist to stay with him for another matter.

After Koharu left, Diavel immediately asked whether the Protagonist was a Beta Tester and following their admission, stated that he too was a Beta Tester and that they should keep that between them given the sensitive nature of the topic. Diavel was also hurt by Kibaou's statements, as he had prioritized himself over helping individuals, however his rationale was that he would not be able to help the 10.000 trapped players escape, if he was busy helping 1 player somewhere. Glad to be understood and comforted by the Protagonist, he declared that he would be the one to guide the players to victory in Aincrad. After a brief conversation, the knight in blue thanked the Protagonist for their little chat, and Koharu arrived promptly after from her task. Koharu was curious what they had chatted about, but the Protagonist decided to keep it a secret for the time being and everyone left the amphitheater to rest until the next day.

The Protagonist and Koharu met up the next morning, eager for the boss fight, but Koharu made sure to remind them their promise to Sachi that they would survive. The duo then joined the players who were grouping up around the fountain, as Diavel was making his preparation speech before heading out of Tolbana, and into the Floor 1 labyrinth.

Floor 1 Labyrinth & Illfang the Kobold Lord Battle

On the way to the labyrinth, Kirito approached Koharu and shared his surprise that she had decided to take part in the clearing effort. When Koharu tried to downplay her skills, Kirito quickly interjected that he was given the support duty in the backline, while they were part of the main party to take on Illfang. Their chat however, was broken apart by the hooded player -Kirito's party member- barging in and telling everyone to save personal chats for later. Kirito felt the need to apologize for his partner's unsociable personality, before speeding up towards the labyrinth.

Once the clearing group finally reached the door of the Floor Boss Room, Diavel once again gave a rousing speech to motivate all players and reminded them that Illfang would change his weapons once his HP goes low. The raid party then valiantly entered the room and faced Illfang the Kobold Lord to clear the first floor of Aincrad.

The raid battle ensued smoothly with individual parties sticking to their roles until Illfang's health was lowered enough to prompt the weapon change. Taking the momentary pause in fighting, Diavel ordered the attacking party to surround Illfang as he was switching his weapon, but the room suddenly filled with Kirito's warning that the new weapon was a different sword than the one in the Beta information. He ordered everyone to retreat, but the uncooperative Diavel was hit by Illfang's attack instead and got stunned. Agil tried to rush in to protect him from a follow up attack, but was too late. The Protagonist instead jumped through the hoard of enemies and managed to block Illfang's attack, saving Diavel's life and Kirito successfully cleared a path through the monsters immediately after to secure an escape route for Diavel to be evacuated from.

After Diavel apologized for trying to snag the Last Attack Bonus for himself in the heat of the moment, Agil interjected, warning everyone that the raid group was falling apart and was on the verge of having casualties. Kirito was indecisive for a moment, but sprung into action when the fencer in the red hood shared her support as well. Kirito shared some commands to the fencer she referred to as Asuna and the duo made their move towards Illfang, with the Protagonist and Koharu following immediately after. With the help of other valiant players like Agil and Kibaou lending their aid as well, the group quickly whittled down the remaining HP of the Floor boss. In a final flurry of combos with Asuna, Kirito managed to land the last attack and shattered Illfang into polygons, clearing Floor 1 of Aincrad.

Agil and Diavel both congratulated Kirito for his contribution and the Last Attack, they were drowned out by Kibaou accusing him for lying to the rest of the players and in doing so, putting the entire raid party in danger. While Koharu tried to argue that Kirito tried his best to protect everyone, Kibaou claimed that he created the dangerous situation by omitting information and rushed in to steal the spotlight, causing murmurs in the crowd whether Kirito had used Diavel as bait. Asuna and even Diavel tried to interject, but seeing that the crowd was growing unruly towards all Beta Testers, Kirito cut them off and singled himself out from the rest to take the blame solely on his shoulders in an act of superiority. Hearing about his claims of knowing information even informants do not possess, members of the raid party accused him of being both a Beta Tester and a Cheater, coming up with the term Beater to label the swordsman.

Kirito took up the title and moved on to Floor 2, leaving Koharu stumped as to why the kind person she knew would act this way. The Protagonist, Agil and Asuna explained to her as to how he seemed to be putting himself up as a scapegoat to prevent further conflict between the Beta Testers and others. Asuna then talked about how Kirito helped her in the dungeon when she had passed out after three days of non-stop grinding and how he changed her perspective to this digital world. She then mentioned she would be following him up to the second floor. Agil asked her to relay that he is looking forward to fighting the second floor boss with him too, and the Protagonist added that they would be there too.

After Asuna left, the Protagonist, Koharu and Agil turned their attention to a discussion that sparked between Diavel and Kibaou, where Diavel shared his decision that he would be quitting the frontlines, citing his faults as a leader. When Kibaou objected that it was the fault of the Beater, Diavel asked him to face the reality that they would have suffered greatly without the help of Kirito. The knight in blue admitted that it was his mistake for not noticing Illfang's change of weaponry, and that he was too eager to land the last strike. The spiky haired swordsman followed up with asking who would replace them as their leader, prompting Diavel to recommend him and another member of the raid team, Lind as suitable choices. As his last piece of advice, Diavel stressed how important of an ally Kirito is and that they should keep him around. Promising to the Protagonist that he would return to repay his debt to them and Kirito, Diavel bid his farewells and left the boss room.

As other players slowly started leaving and Koharu was left together with the Proganist, she apologized to them for completely freezing up when Diavel needed help. Despite the Protagonist's best efforts to ease her concerns, she was worried what might happen if she remained unable to act in key moments. With determination in her emerald green eyes, she promised to become stronger to stand side by side with them, Kirito and Asuna. The duo then moved on to the second floor of the steel castle floating in the sky.

Floor 2[]

Arrival on Floor 2

The Protagonist and Koharu were immediately greeted by Argo upon arriving on the 2nd Floor, after an unspecified amount of time following the Floor 1 Boss battle. Koharu was surprised about the whiskers now decorating the face of the info broker, but when asked about them, Argo set up a high price for the info regarding the reason for the whiskers, prompting Koharu to step back. Argo then shared some basic info about the floor free of charge, leaving the Protagonist and Koharu to start exploring the floor.

As Koharu was starting to suspect the entire floor was full of bulls, Kirito confirmed her suspicions by approaching the duo alongside Asuna. The fencer suggested Koharu that they should upgrade their weapons before tackling the second floor, as she and Kirito were collecting materials at that very moment. Taking the time to relax and chatting together for a while about his "Beater" status, Koharu and the Protagonist eventually realized that the Kirito with them right now, was the Kirito they met during the Beta as well.[† 1] The duo making a remark about how cool he was acting even back then, earned biting commentary from Asuna as to how Kirito always tries to act cool, while the boy helplessly tried to defend himself that he was just trying to roleplay accurate to his avatar back then. As their chatter wrapped up, Koharu offered to help the duo with their material grind and they agreed to meet at the Teleport Gate once they were done.

After hunting enough Onrushing Cows in Grotto Plains for materials, the two parties regrouped at the teleport gate and Asuna gave Koharu a new weapon and some additional upgrade materials to thank them for their help. While Kirito could not stop gushing about the thrill of upgrading weapons to the Protagonist, Asuna stopped him as the duo had other matters to attend to. Immediately after they left, Koharu and the Protagonist were met by Kibaou asking questions about their weapons, to which responded with a summary of the past minutes. The spiky haired swordsman then opened up about wanting to follow in the footsteps of Diavel and that he could use the help of the two players.

The duo met Kibaou later, who informed them that the clearing group split into two after Diavel left the front lines, now led by Aincrad Liberation Squad led by him, and the Dragon Knights led by Lind. The spiky haired swordsman then asked Koharu and the Protagonist to help him gear up his unofficial guild and offered to pay in return for their help. The Protagonist accepted and went back to the field with Koharu to collect materials.

After hunting enough Trembling Cows, and then Glaring Shrewmen upon Kibaou's subsequent request, the Protagonist and Koharu arrived at their next meeting place with the spiky haired swordsman, but could not find him around. The downtime waiting for Kibaou gave Koharu time to reflect and question why the two guilds cannot just peacefully work together and that Diavel should have continued to lead the frontline as a single group. The leader of the unofficial ALS then arrived, thanking the two players for their help and invited them to join the guild. Upon the Protagonist refusing the offer, Kibaou understandingly accepted the refusal and thanks both of them once more for their help. When he left, Koharu could only wonder how great it would be if Kibaou did not hate Beta Testers, prompting Kirito to leave his hiding spot in agreement, where he had taken refuge earlier upon seeing the spiky hairs. He then offered to show something new to the duo and asked to meet them again at Natural Cave.

Floor 2 Boss Battle

Once they reached the privacy of the cave, Kirito and Asuna explained that the rivalry was not as productive as it may have seemed to the outside and that the two unofficial guilds had been fighting over farming locations and who would run the next raid. Argo then made a sudden entrance, interrupting Kirito, and explained that she had info on an important quest. The girl with whiskers stated that there were, in fact, quests that communicated key information about the Floor Bosses and overlooking the existence of one such quest led to the chaos that transpired against Illfang the Kobold Lord. The quest featured two branches. The one following the Smith's Guild was tasked to Kirito and Asuna and the other following the Merchant's Guild was tasked to the Protagonist and Koharu by Argo. The two parties agreed to regroup by the Labyrinth once they completed their branches and set off.

After hunting the materials from Blood Wolfsfor the Merchant's Guild, the Protagonist and Koharu arrived at their meeting spot, but came across Sachi instead who was looking for her four friends. She explained that she got separated with them after a bull attack, fearing they may be harmed. Just as she was panicking, Koharu calmly recommended that she should try messaging them first, which quickly alleviated Sachi's worries as her friends responded they had quickly fled back to Floor 1 after the event. To ensure her safety, Koharu suggested that she and the Protagonist escort her back to Floor 1. Not having met with Kirito and Asuna yet, they were lucky enough to have Agil around, who said he was going into the dungeon and that he'd relay their message to Kirito if they came across each other.

After escorting Sachi to a teleport monument, Koharu and the Protagonist returned to the entrance of the Floor 2 labyrinth and met with Argo, who collected the key items required from both parties and completed the information quest. The intel mentioned a Bull King whose lightning breath would be telegraphed by a twinkle in his eyes. Kirito quickly recalled Nato the Colonel Taurus and Baran the General Taurus from the Beta who were the bosses of Floor 2, which brought to the groups attention that neither Nato nor Baran were kings, nor did they have a lightning breath attack, tipping them on a surprise third boss. Due to the clearing groups already being on the road to the Boss Room, the group rushed inside the labyrinth to warn them about the change.

Kirito and the Protagonist clearing the Elixir of the Forest quest

During the clearing efforts of Floor 1, the Protagonist arrived at an establishment in the Village of Horunka. As they looked to tackle the quest that rewards the Anneal Blade, Kirito approached them with advice on how safely clear it and offered to assist them.

After heading to the Horunka Woods and defeating two dozen Nepenthes variants, the Protagonist was fortunate enough to receive a Little Nepenthes Ovule. Kirito complained slightly that it had taken him much longer to obtain one, but quickly apologized for getting himself lost in memories, and suggested they head back to town to complete the quest.

The duo returned to Horunka and the Protagonist received their reward upon handing over the item. Kirito added that the quest giver NPC had her daughter in the backroom, who was not there in the Beta. The swordsman started to talk about having a sister himself, however quickly stopped himself before elaborating what he had in mind. Kirito quickly thanked for the opportunity to earn some extra EXP and bid his farewells.
