As Vassago continues his ruthless rampage, Kirito remains unconscious and tormented by the traumas of his past. He is unable to wake up and face the threat that endangers all the Japanese players and the inhabitants of the Underworld. Asuna, who has been fighting bravely by his side, is almost overwhelmed by despair. But then, she hears a familiar voice in her ear: Yuuki, her dear friend who passed away. Yuuki's words fill Asuna with courage and determination, and she stands up once more to confront Vassago. She unleashes a powerful attack that almost finishes him off. But Vassago is not done yet. He draws on the energy of the surrounding area to heal himself and gain control of the red players, commanding them to join his assault.
Kirito's Fluctlight is still dormant, despite the efforts of Asuna, Sinon and Leafa to revive him with their own. Higa is losing hope, until he notices a faint signal coming from Eugeo's Blue Rose Sword. It is a fragment of Eugeo's soul, that somehow remained inside the sword after his death. The fragment reaches Kirito, and reminds him of his bond with Eugeo and his duty to protect the Underworld. Kirito feels a surge of emotion, and his Fluctlight starts to glow again. He opens his eyes, and finds himself in the middle of a battlefield, surrounded by red players. He grabs the Blue Rose Sword, and activates its full power, freezing the enemies in ice. He then sees Vassago, who is about to attack his friends. Kirito rushes to stop him, determined to defend the Underworld and his loved ones.
