Warning: Page format templates must be copy-pasted in SOURCE mode only. Pasting them in visual might lead to copying complex formatting codes as well.

General[]

Page Labels[]

 • Warning must be added at the top of the page for pages that mention events not covered by the anime, including post-anime content and content omitted from the anime, such as side stories.
 • stub must be added at the top of pages that are incomplete and have less than 2,000-2,500 bytes of content. In case Warning is used on the page, Stub must be listed below it.
 • Under Construction must be added to pages that are incomplete but are too big to be considered stubs (over 2,000-2,500 bytes of content) or pages that an editor has adopted to improve/finish up but will take time to finish the article. It's not necessary to add the template if you can finish the page in one go. In case Warning is used on the page, Under Construction must be listed below it. Under Construction cannot be used together with Stub at the top of a page, except for cases when an editor has adopted a stub page. In such a case, Under Construction must be listed below Stub

General Content Rules[]

 • Summaries should be written in past tense.
 • Character names should not be westernised. Japanese names on the wiki are written with the family name first when the full name is used.
 • Irrelevant information should be avoided.
 • Lists should be ordered alphabetically. An exception to this rule are character articles, where the character in question is always mentioned first in any list.

Other[]

 • Unused headings on a page should be deleted. More headings may be added depending on the article.
 • Nihongo should only be used for official (or at least semi-official) names and terms. Fan-made names must NOT use the Nihongo or add kanji/romaji to the infobox and MUST BE MARKED as Category:Unofficially Titled Articles.

Chronology[]

A list of possible chronology headings for all pages with the appropriate sub-headings in the correct level. More headings may be created based on the situation, but anime episode names should not be used in chronology, as we base the chronology on the novel, not anime.

Infobox parameter descriptions[]

Infobox parameter descriptions
Parameter Description
Image Adds an image to the top of the infobox. Use tabbers to display multiple images for different games.

Tabber format:
<tabber>
RL=|-|
SAO = |-|
</tabber>
Add as many tabs as the number of games the character has played. Use only one image per game, unless the character has multiple avatars for the same game (e.g., Asuna with Titania and Erica).

Name (Kanji) The character's real name in Japanese.

Also used for Underworld character names.

Name (Romaji) A romanisation of the character's Japanese name.

Also used for Underworld character names.

Display Name The character's name of their in-game avatar (in Japanese). Romanisation provided in parentheses.

Is not used for Underworld character names.

In-Game Name Used to indicate the official spelling of the avatar's name in-game, as indicated on game menus and windows. Some characters may use Japanese characters to write their name, instead of writing them in the Latin alphabet (e.g., GGO players like Uemaru). This parameter is only used to indicate how the name is registered in the system, regardless of the writing system used. The parameter should be left empty if there is no confirmation how the name is written in-game.

Is not used for Underworld character names.

Epithet Widely known nicknames for the character (e.g., Black Swordsman, The Rat)
Age The characters age in years, when it's known. Needs to be referenced. As age changes with story progression, multiple age instances should be indicated from different parts of the story, with parentheses indicating which story/year a specific age applies to.
Birthdate The date of the character's birth. Must be referenced.
Death The date/time and reason of the character's death (if applicable and known). Must be referenced. Date and time (if known) goes first; reason (if known) must go in a new line if the date/time of the death is listed on the infobox.
Gender The character's gender.
Height The character's height, if known. Height is only indicated as described in the novel or other official sources, i.e., in the metric system (centimetres), except for American characters (when their height is described in Imperial units in the novel) or other cases when the novel/other official sources don't use the metric system. Must be referenced.
Weight The character's weight, if known. Weight is only indicated as described in the novel or other official sources, i.e., in the metric system (kilograms), except for American characters (when their weight is described in Imperial units in the novel) or other cases when the novel/other official sources don't use the metric system. Must be referenced.
BWH The character's bust-waist-hips measurements, if known. Must be referenced.
Blood Type The character's blood type in the ABO system, if known. Only a few characters have confirmed blood types.
Race The fairy race of the character's avatar in ALO.
VR A list of games or simulations the player has taken part in. Includes virtual realities and augmented realities. Each game/simulation has to be listed in a new line.
VR (Cameo) A parameter for listing brief cameos in games. Intended to be used for 1) when the character visits a world but doesn't actually play it, 2) when a character converts their account to another game for a brief period of time without getting a new avatar.
Affiliation A list of the person's guilds, organizations, and sides taken in a war.
Family A list of the person's known family members and official love partners (boy/girlfriends, husbands/wives).
Occupation A list of the character's occupations
Voiced By The character's Japanese voice actor/actress
Voiced By (English) The character's English dub voice actor/actress
Novel The character's first debut in the novel (publication-wise and chronology-wise should be indicated separately if they are different)
Manga The character's first debut in the manga (publication-wise and chronology-wise should be indicated separately if they are different)
Anime The character's first debut in the anime.
Game The character's first debut in the SAO real life game adaptations. Not to be confused with the VR parameter that lists games the character has played in-series.

Article section descriptions[]

Article section descriptions
Section What to include What to avoid Notes
Introduction
 • Begin with the character's full name and in-game names (see notes).
 • Arcs that the character participates in (see notes).
 • Games that the character plays (see notes).
 • Brief explanation of who that character is (e.g., daughter of a CEO, one of the 10,000 players of SAO)
 • Races/classes in the games the character plays (if applicable).
 • Popular nicknames/epithets for the character in-series.
 • Guilds or organisations the character is part of/works for. Work titles.
 • Major events briefly (as needed for context for the above: how they began playing games, how they got their nicknames, how/why they joined guilds etc.).
 • Excessively detailed plot recounts
 • Random trivia that don't help define the character
Names must be listed with the Nihongo template to include the Japanese reading of the name.

Standard format for the first sentence: Real world name translation to English, also known as In-game name translation to English in {full game name} is a [main/supporting/minor] character in the {arc name}.
Current events should be in present tense. Past events should be in past tense. If the character died, all events are to be treated as past events.

Appearance

In the following order:

 1. Age and body build (e.g., a 22 year-old skinny/plump/muscular/tall/short man/woman)
 2. Character's facial features and hair
 3. Outfit description
 4. Weapon(s) description
 5. Full-body design art of the character. If none exist, other full-body images can be used for illustration[Character 1]
 • Very subjective descriptions.[Character 2]
 • Nickname descriptions
 • Plot details (excluding brief references to the timeframe for the described appearance)
 • B-W-H measurements ("three sizes")[Character 3]
Sub-sections: Real Life, Sword Art Online, ALfheim Online, etc. (if applicable)

This section requires heavy referencing - any detail must be referenced.
Current appearance should be in present tense. Descriptions of previous outfits and so forth should be in past tense.

Personality
 • Description of personality traits
 • References or examples to support them
 • Blanket statements without any examples or references
 • Plot summaries
 • Excessive focus on other characters
 • Relationship descriptions
No subsections.

Each personality trait must have either a reference, or an example.
Personality traits that still apply to the character should be described in present tense, while others should be in past tense. Examples should be written in past tense.

Background Events that took place before the story that the character first appears in, and that contribute to understanding the character. No subsections.

Background should be written in past tense.

Chronology
 • A summary of the plot from the character's perspective
 • Specific dates/time for events where known
 • Describing events from the perspective of other characters
 • Excessive plot details
Chronology is divided into sub-sections by arc/side story (see chronology section list).

References in this section are only needed when mentioning details from other stories than the subsection name implies.
Chronology should be written in past tense.

Relationships How the character in question sees their relationship with other characters
 • Focus on the perspective of other characters
 • Plot summaries
This section is rarely used on the wiki, as it is low priority.

Long relationship sections may be split to a subpage.
Details that still apply should be written in present tense. Old details and descriptions of past events should be written in past tense.

Stats See template below for the table Each entry must be referenced.
Known Equipment See template below for the table Each entry must be referenced.
Skills A list of the characters skills and Sword Skills

See template below for the format

Each entry must be referenced.
Notable Achievements A short list of the character's noteworthy achievements (e.g., tournaments won, floor boss battles won etc.)
 • Excessively long and complicated entries. Each entry should be as short and simple as possible.
Each entry should be written in a new line and preceded by a *.
Gallery
 • Images that include the character
 • Captions that explain what's happening in the image or that describe what kind of image it is and where it's from (e.g., for character designs).
 • Verbs in captions. Captions should use participles and nouns to describe the image, unless the caption is complicated enough to require a supplementary verb.
When a gallery has 5 or more images, the gallery should be split into a subpage. The subpage should then divide the gallery into sections by medium and story arc.
Trivia
 • Random facts/tidbits about the character that are too random for other sections.
 • Sources for each such fact.
 • Supposed "references" to other series when no such link has officially been confirmed.
 • Alternative spellings and translations for names.[Character 4]
 • Beginning any trivia with pronouns.
 • Excessively long and complicated trivia. Each trivia should be as short and simple as possible.
 • Images
 • Chaining trivia (except for certain instances).
Each trivia should be written in a new line and preceded by a *.
 1. 1) File link should be posted above the text for the paragraph that the image illustrates. 2) Due to possible collision with the character's infobox, the illustrations should be aligned left, rather than right. 3) If the file is too big compared to the text it accompanies, place a Clr after the text to prevent the image from overlapping with the next section.
 2. Especially when they don't even add any actual information to the text.
 3. Should be covered under Trivia.
 4. Annotations about names, including alternative or incorrect spellings or translations, disambiguation etc., should be covered at the top of the article in a standardised format.

Manual of Style[]

Basic[]

Basic Style Issues
Issue Bad Example Suggestions Good Examples
Pronouns
Avoid second person pronouns ("you") "If you accept the offer for a cup of water, the steady sound of a child coughing is soon heard from the other side of a door to the next room and you can then offer your help to the NPC." Use impersonal pronouns ("one", singular "they") or nouns like "player", "user", etc.. "If the player accepts the offer for a cup of water, the steady sound of a child coughing is soon heard from the other side of a door to the next room and the player can then offer their help to the NPC."[1]
Don't begin a paragraph with a pronoun *Her English voice actor Cassandra Lee Morris [...][2] The first mention of a character in a paragraph should either use the character's name, or some indirect way of referring to them. *Suguha's English voice actor Cassandra Lee Morris [...]

Phrases that can be used to refer to characters indirectly: "the boys", "the swordsman(men)", "the couple" etc.

Shortcuts
Avoid contractions Don't, didn't, won't, can't, they're, you're, they'll, he's, she's. Do not, did not, will not, cannot, they are, you are, they will, he is, she is.
Introduce your abbreviations "Thor is one of the NPCs that are part of The Holy Sword of the Ice Palace quest in ALO. [...] Like the other NPCs created through the Cardinal's Automatic Quest Generation Function, Thor possesses a higher level of intelligence than usual NPCs. Thor is one of the Non-Player Characters (NPCs) that are part of The Holy Sword of the Ice Palace quest in ALfheim Online (ALO). [...] Like the other NPCs created through the Cardinal's Automatic Quest Generation Function, Thor possesses a higher level of intelligence than usual NPCs.
Word choice
Avoid overused words Say, tell, talk, go Use more specific synonyms. A thesaurus might be of use here. If you can't find a good synonym to use, consider rephrasing the sentence so that you wouldn't need the word in the first place. Say/tell: inform, claim, declare, announce

Talk: converse, have a conversation
Go: travel, arrive at, visit

Avoid phrasal verbs Wake up, stumble upon/come across, sign up, go up against, give up, calm down, find out Almost all phrasal verbs have one-word synonyms that are usually better suited for formal/semi-formal register. Wake up --> awake;
stumble upon/come across -->
encounter;
sign up --> register;
go up against --> confront;
give up --> surrender, resign, abandon;
calm down --> relax, assuage (e.g., one's fears);
find out --> discover
Avoid informal words, phrases and idioms "Long story short, Sinon was feared that she was going to resign because she inputted her address [...]"[3]

"With the maked-up name Kikuoka create; Kiriko, he spawned right into the lobby [...]."[3]
"Even though eating the virtual food in the game world would get rid of the unpleasant hungry feeling when playing [...]"[4]
"However, her resolution was cut short when she discovered that she only had three days before the time limit for reviving a familiar expired. As Kirito offered to help her get there [...]"[5]
"The next morning on February 24, [...] Silica and Kirito began making their way to the Hill of Memories."[6]
"While the players [were] able to hold their own against the boss, [...] Eiji calmly observed the battle from nearby [...]"[7]

"Long story short, Sinon feared she would resign because she inputted her address [...]"

"Kirito spawned into the lobby as Kiriko, a secondary account created by Kikuoka Seijirou [...]"
"Even though eating virtual food in the game world would eliminate the unpleasant sensation of hunger when playing [...]"
"However, her resolution was broken when she discovered that she only had three days before the time limit for reviving a Tamed Monster expired. As Kirito offered to help her obtain the item, [...]"
"The next morning on February 24, [...] Silica and Kirito began their journey to the Hill of Memories."
"While the players were fighting against the boss, [...] Eiji calmly observed the battle from nearby [...]" OR "As the battle was underway [...]" (rephrasing the entire clause to avoid the idiomatic expression and to get the intended meaning across better)

Avoid using the same word/phrase repeatedly "After the first qualifier, Kirito is confronted with the Death Gun. Upon confrontation, Death Gun showed him the tattoo of Laughing Coffin [...]."[3]

"Sinon successfully killed the player, stealing the kill from the Death Gun."[3]

Use synonyms or different grammatical structures. Also consider merging the two sentences to not have to repeat the subject. "Confronted by Death Gun after the first qualifier, Kirito discovered that the man had a Laughing Coffin tattoo [...]" (merged sentences)

"Sinon succeeded in sniping the player, stealing the kill from Death Gun." (synonyms)

Spelling
British and American English spellings are both fine N/A Use Google to double check if what you believe to be a misspelling is actually a misspelling, rather than just a spelling variant. 1. Nouns with -our/-or suffixes: armour/armor, colour/color, favourite/favorite

2. Verbs with -ise/-ize and -yse/-yze suffixes: recognise/recognize, analyse/analyze
3. Nouns with -ence/-ense suffixes: defence/defense, offence/offense, licence/license
4. L doubling: travelling/traveling
5. Nouns with -re/-er suffixes: centre/center, metre/meter 6. Others: story/storey

Names
Don't abbreviate character names Liz Lisbeth
Use first (given) or full names for characters Yuuki (Asuna, Kyouko, Shouzou?), Kayaba, Shigemura (Tetsuhiro, Yuuna?), Kikuoka, Aki A family name (surname) can be used to refer to a specific character, if it is used with a title. Yuuki Asuna/Asuna, Kayaba Akihiko, Professor Shigemura/Tetsuhiro, Lieutenant Colonel Kikuoka/Seijirou, Nurse Aki/Aki Natsuki.
Don't use in-game names for real people and vice versa
Links
Avoid using complex links Kirito Redirects are preferred Kirito
Don't use HTTP(S) links for articles /wiki/Kirigaya_Kazuto Kirigaya Kazuto Articles should be linked with internal links (double square brackets on either side) Kirigaya Kazuto
Link the same thing only once per article A second link may be used for lists.
Other
Don't use parentheses/brackets to add extraneous info 1) "He told Nurse Aki how he had killed 3 Laughing Coffin members (one was Kuradeel in order to protect Asuna, and the other two were when him and 50 other front line players had attacked their secret base to stop this killing guild from action)."[8]

2) "Once «Sword Art Online» was cleared (until that point the SAO servers were untouchable), he was able to hack into SAO server via router and obtain the minds of 300 SAO players (Asuna being among the 300 players) as test subjects [...]"[9]

If you'd like to add extra information to the sentence, try to incorporate it into the sentence itself. How this is done depends on the specific case, but examples include using appositions, using a colon to make a list, adding the extra info as a relative clause etc.. In certain cases, a NoteTag template may be of use. 1) "He told Nurse Aki how he had killed three Laughing Coffin members: Kuradeel in order to protect Asuna, and two others when the front line players had attacked Laughing Coffin's secret base."

2) "Once «Sword Art Online» was cleared (until that point the SAO servers were untouchable), he was able to hack into SAO server via router and obtain the minds of 300 SAO players, including Asuna, as test subjects [...]"
Examples of good use of parentheses: Kirigaya Kazuto (Kirito), Sword Art Online (SAO)

Write out short numbers in words 3, 10, 15 Three, ten, fifteen

Advanced[]

Advanced Style Issues
Issue Bad Example Suggestions Good Examples
Don't go overboard with synonyms "YUNA entered the scene via a drone and announced the start of the joust (=a combat on horseback between two knights with lances) [...]"[7] Always double check whether your synonym actually means what you think it does. Just because a word is listed as a synonym for a word you're looking for does not mean it holds the exact same meaning. Complex synonyms tend to be used in very specific senses and/or contexts, while certain synonyms may only be loosely connected to your word.

Avoid using archaic synonyms.

"YUNA announced the start of the fight/battle/combat [...]"
Be concise[† 1]

a) "Sensing that the would be player killer and his accomplices would make another attempt on his and Asuna's lives, he resolved to teach his partner how to protect herself against such inevitable encounters. With that thought in mind, after the two reserved separate rooms at an inn for the night, Kirito informed the girl of the incident and requested that they resume practicing player versus player combat in the morning [...]"[10]

b) "As they approached the bridge that marked the entrance to the Hill of Memories on their journey back, though, Silica and Kirito were ambushed by Rosalia, who the latter identified as the leader of the orange guild Titan's Hand. Shocked at the revelation that her former party member had been waiting to ambush her, the girl grew concerned when the woman summoned the rest of her guild into view. To her surprise, however, Kirito, who was revealed to be the legendary Black Swordsman and a member of the Clearers, demonstrated his ability to effortlessly handle the orange players' attacks before intimidating them into teleporting to the Black Iron Castle via a corridor crystal, where they would surrender themselves to the Aincrad Liberation Force's custody. After the pair returned to the Weathercock Pavilion, Silica was allayed by Kirito of the insecurities she had over the difference between their levels, and they promised to meet again in the real world, upon which the Beast Tamer used the flower to revive Pina."[6] (largely off-topic, since this was written for the Silica article, not Kirito's)

Rule of thumb: if something can be removed without much effect on the plot, it's either too irrelevant (extraneous information spectrum), or poorly explained (lack of detail spectrum).

Avoid straying from the topic at hand to go into excessive details.

a) "Predicting that another attempt would be made on his and Asuna's lives, he resolved to teach his partner how to protect herself against such inevitable encounters. With that thought in mind, Kirito informed the girl of the incident, requesting to resume their player versus player combat practices in the morning [...]"
b) "Silica and Kirito were ambushed by Rosalia and the other members of the «Titan's Hand» orange guild on their return trip. To her surprise, however, the orange players were effortlessly handled by Kirito and forced to teleport to the prison at the Black Iron Palace. After the pair returned to the Weathercock Pavilion, the two promised to meet each other again in the real world as they revived Pina."

Avoid using "and" to connect clauses "As Kirito offered to help her get there, Silica asked for the reason why he was so helpful, and discovered that she resembled his sister [...]"[5] Participle, relative and other subordinate clauses are a much better way to connect clauses "As Kirito offered to help her obtain the item, Silica asked for the reason why he was so helpful, discovering that she resembled his sister [...]." OR "When Silica asked for the reason why he was so helpful, she discovered that she resembled his sister [...]"
Avoid meta-references "[...] His hands were armored, and he also appeared to be very thin. It is later revealed that in real life he has an uneven tangle of long hair, thin cheeks covered by a stubby beard, and silver earrings on his ears."[11]

"The episode began with the protagonist, a young 14 year old male player, accessing the game at 13:00 [...]."[4]

Use in-universe dates, time and/or events rather than using episode or volume numbers to denote what part of the story you're writing about. In some cases, you could use official arc names to refer to a specific story without referring to a specific medium of the story (i.e., novel, manga or anime). "[...] His hands were armored, and he also appeared to be very thin. It is later revealed that In real life, he has an uneven tangle of long hair, thin cheeks covered by a stubby beard, and silver earrings on his ears."

"A young fourteen year-old male player accessed the game at 13:00 [...]"

Avoid direct quotations of a character's words "Shino recalled the person's last words to her before her death, an odd but chilling sentence he whispered in her ear in English-- the words "Your soul will be so sweet.""[12] Use reported speech to convey what a character has said if it's relevant to the summary. "[...] the girl felt a chill as she recalled the time she was ambushed during the tournament by the player and he whispered to her in English that her soul would be sweet."
Avoid excessive commas in a row "The Integrity Knight ignored the commotion and, tying Alice to his dragon, ascended into the sky and vanished."[13] Avoid mid-sentence subordinate clauses. Instead, try to move them to the beginning or end of the sentence so you'd only need one comma per clause.
Consider rephrasing the sentence to use a grammatical structure that does not require commas, or requires fewer of them.
"Ignoring the commotion, the Integrity Knight finished tying Alice to his dragon and ascended into the sky, vanishing into the distance." (moving subordinate clauses to the beginning and end of the sentence)
Use more formal words where possible "Johnny tried to emphasize the severity of the circumstances to the boy but was restrained by PoH."[14] "Johnny attempted to emphasize the severity of the circumstances to the boy but was restrained by PoH."
Present a neutral point of view[† 2] "He is also a sick person as he had sexually harassed and molested Asuna."[15]

"He's also hotter in the virtual world than in the real world."[16]

Overly simplistic sentences should be avoided. Make use of relative clauses, subordinate clauses, participle clauses and other ways to convey more information in a single sentence while also making it flow better.
Avoid bullet-point-like summaries. "Alice, Eugeo, and Kirito came to the conclusion that an Integrity Knight was responsible for the death of the dragon. Kirito pulled a sword, the «Blue Rose Sword», from the dragon's remains, but its weight forced him to leave his newfound treasure behind; the three then returned to their original goal of gathering ice."[17] Try to tie events together. One sentence should flow naturally into the next one to make it clear how one thing led to another.
Use subordinate/relative/participle clauses to add context in-between two sentences.
Use conjunctions like "as/because/due to" to indicate a cause and effect.
"While speculating on the cause of the dragon's death, Kirito pulled a sword, known as the «Blue Rose Sword» in the village's legends, from the dragon's remains. However, due to the sword's weight and their unwillingness to rob the dragon's grave, the children instead returned to their original goal of gathering ice."
Avoid vague or overly generalised statements that raise more questions than give answers. "Upon their arrival in the Town of Beginnings, Asuna reflected on how she had used her brother's NerveGear on an impulse to enter Sword Art Online on the launch of its official service, the actions she had taken following the events of that same day, and how her motivations had changed from before and after that time."[18] Instead of stating that a character thought about subject X, describe the actual thoughts on the subject. Preferably, weave it seamlessly into the narrative and avoid excessive digressions from the plot at hand.

Alternatively, convert the statements into subordinate clauses to use for transition, instead of just reciting what topics were covered in an inner monologue.

In either case, avoid mentioning too many topics, especially if you're not going into any details and the content is irrelevant to the plot.

a) "Upon arriving in the Town of Beginnings for the first time in months, Asuna was reminded of her first day in Sword Art Online, when she had used her brother's NerveGear on an impulse. Reminiscing about her past, she realised that she had not been able to enjoy her life by living in the present until her life was changed by Kirito. (being more specific)

b) "After reflecting on how she had used her brother's NerveGear on an impulse to enter Sword Art Online on launch day, Asuna [cover plot progression here]" (converting overgeneralised statements into transition)

Use main clauses to make progress with the plot; use subordinate clauses to add in context and details
Passive sentence structures are preferred.
Avoid making the topic of the article sound like a background character. "There, [Koharu and the Protagonist] listened as Kayaba Akihiko appeared in his Game Master avatar and announced how all the players were now trapped in SAO until the game was cleared."[19] Instead, use phrasings that would focus on the topic character's perspective. "There, [Koharu and the Protagonist] learnt from Kayaba Akihiko's announcement that all the players were now trapped in SAO until the game was cleared.

Detailed explanations:

 1. Summaries should not have extraneous details, but neither should they lack details whatsoever to the point where the course of events doesn't make sense. A summary should have enough context for the main plot to make sense, but not more than necessary.
 2. Subjective remarks that, for example, criticise/insult characters or show bias in some other way must be avoided.
