  • I was really surprised when Kirito just jumped right into the new world without picking what his avatar would look like. Did the author made him look like a girl on purpose for this arc?

    • Nearly every VRMMO game in the series randomly generates avatar appearance. In most games, all you can choose is your name, race and maybe modify your hairstyle later on. Asuka Empire might be the only known game with more customisation options, but even then it apparently doesn't allow full control over avatar customisation.

In-universe-wise, Kirito just happened to get a very rare avatar. Though this of course has use for the story too. Kirito wouldn't have become acquainted with Sinon if he looked like a guy.

    • Ok. Thanks, I am still new to this whole mmo anime theme. That is really helpful.

    • Personally, I think the avatar randomizer is a stupid feature. Avatars mean a lot to people and taking away the element of choice would realisticly cause a huge uproar.

    • I prefer choice and not a random avatar.

    • Tbh,I like the randomize option,I'll admit it's nice to be who you choose to be,but seeing what you get is also cool, cuz it's like your character is getting born completely beyond your control

    • I like the approach they did with kirito here, cuz it honestly makes sense for the type of mmo he's in

it would also provide a large risk concerning security - refer to S1E1. two players are tricked into believing the other's entirely false avatar, one pretending to be female and the other 17 - something that goes on alot in many places anyway, but would be much more effective in VRMMOs

    • Cos all the girls seem to like Kirito?

    • It is rumored the "M-9000"-type avatars, which create the appearance of an F-class avatar, can be gained by converting a VRMMO account with extremely high playtime, which most likely explains it due to Kirito's time in SAO, then ALO.

Like how kirito gets warped to the Sylph capital in fairy dance this is something we get an in universe supposition on why that fits, but never 100% confirmation.

    • When Kirito created his ALO character, the system announcer told him that the appearance will be randomized. I've never understood where's the sense in it. And there must be ways to customize the character's appearance since the hair of Kirito's character at the beginning of the SAO II series is different from that when he first entered ALO, and Asuna's appearance is just the same as in real life, except her hair color. Too much similarity for a coincidence, at least.

Small spoilers but in the beginning during when they are talking with the gm. All players gotten a item that reviewed thier exact looks. So it completely changed the avatar to look like the real life player. That is the reason he looks diffrent in the beginning from when he first entered, at least if I remember and think correctly that's why.

Wait thought you were talking about sword art online not Alo and sword art two sorry. That one I cannot explain why the hair is not the same when he first entered, possibly a error, or somehow he changed it?

You can customize your entire appearance for a fee.

All the SAO players got to transfer their SAO data over, so they all look like themselves except for fairy/race specific features.

Actually I think it was the 8 or 10 months out of the game that made his hair long, So I still think he's actually a boy in it. Think about it as a Sims game, you don't focus your hair as a boy it grows long.
